Easy editing

I think it'd be fun if players can import portraits. Oh and a toolset that is user-friendly sounds nice too. I imagine toolsets like heroes of might and magic campaign editor or warcraft map editor.

You can import your own portraits, although the toolset isn't user friendly. Fortunately, there are a lot of help on these forums for using them.
