Should we have a mod-making contest

I would be happy to give it a shot.

How can we possibly compete with a mod god like Origen?

Well, I am a complete noob at creating a mod, but I will give it a try. The toolkit is downloading as I type this and I will be hunting for the faq afterwards. I will try to enter my music, and incorporate one of my favorite things from the original Bard's Tale Series (remember Magic Mouth's?).... I hope I can figure this out...

Sounds great. There should be plenty of support on these forums for things that you are having trouble figuring out.

chaney wrote:Growler, I followed the link to the tutorial and you mentioned that you were going to post a completed version with everyones input of the tutorial somewhere. Have you done that? If so, where? It would make life easier to have 1 doc that we could just print out or at least do electronic searches on. Thanx
Cheney, hey--don't quite recall all that, but happy to take yer word on it (considering I may've been hangin' with one of the Bards); maybe I planned to create a super-doc with everyone's input, but never got around to it   ..anyhow, the doc that's up should be the latest/greatest ~ what I used to go by when I tried my hand at a micro-dungeon. Very good of Origen to write up all the help/tutorials (that's the entire basis for my doc--I just consolidated & monkeyed with it a bit for my own clarity).

Origen, sure you don't wanna set some sort of constraint on the size of the floor/map? Even if just by saying a total max # of squares (to allow flex in terms of square or rectangly)? The 1 hr play-thru time is a good idea, but also quite subjective. Just a thought.. You da Dungeon-Mod-Master

RicksTavern has also created a super-cool mod--used/created new textures, monsters, etc giving it a unique feel.. folks should check it out--assuming it's still available? (if not, I'll be happy to post/host it with his permission)

Thanks for the add'l tips, Origen...sorry your longer piece got nullified!

Would it be worth it to tap it out in a word processor 1st, then cut'n'paste it into the forum?

Btw, I'm piecing together & saving your on-going/interactive 'tutorial' (w/ HGamer's tips added) in a single document...easier to read/follow & there's a backup of your efforts if the forum ever----goes down again.
I'll post it for others when it's fini.

Does this jog your ancient memory? I am still hopeful that you did do it in 1 form. :P

Hmm...well...erum....let'see...eh...oh...what was the quest?? :?

The primary clew 2 this mysterious conspiracy may be affiliated with the timestamp: 2:59 am.
That could've been the crack, coke, meth, liquor, inner-child, keybd gremlin(s), tequila--or heavenly hell knows what might've been banging something key-esque. 8)
On a slightly more serious B-flat, the doc posted is the latest & greatest & methinks includeth nearly every potentially relevant irreverent rant by anyone who's infernal (yet matronly) mother made them wash their ears the dishes & their soiled...uh, nevermind.

Ok, young scamperoo--quityerstallin' tacticals & git 2 werk on yer Mod to make Mom & God & Origen especially proud.

I thought about limiting the size of the level, but I want to keep it open since I want to make sure everyone trys their hand at the modding.

Also, I don't really plan on making a small map size, so I don't want to place limits on myself, either.

After we are finished, we will see what rules we should add/remove/change.

Well, since there isn't an updated item list, I will do my best to compile one as quickly as possible, as it will probably help with the modding.

What I have done so far was gone through each script file as well as each map file, and made a list of all items that were mentioned in either. I amso went through the crafting tutorials, which mentioned a few other items.

The next step will be to load the game, and check out all of the stores, and note the items there.

At that point, we should have a pretty good list of what is included. I can't think of any other way an item can get into the game, unless it can be crafted and is not in the arcanium, which there isn't supposed to be anything like that.

After that, I would have to script each of these items to be gotten by a high-level party, who can then identify the characteristics (at least the basic ones) orf each item.

Hopefully, at that point, we would have a fairly accurate list of all the new items in the game.

This will take a little time, but I will do my best to have it ready for the ever-expanding modders out there.

Well, so far I have come up with 319 items. I will not have to verify the names, which will be a slow process. In order to do this, I will have to script a giveItems command, and probably do about 10 items at a time, which will allow for me to see what items names are correct. The names that are incorrect will take a little longer to verify.

I Knew Origen had an angle he wuz running here! 8)

So He plans to join the raucous fray, eh??

Seems that Rule numero uno should be:

Rule Numero Uno ~ (1) no Mod-Gods allowed to enter the Competition!

I say (speaking on b-1/2 of all the newbie peonies roustin'bout that the Mod-Godders (that would consist of Origen & RicksTavern) should have their own PRO division in witch 2 compete!

:P  :P

Otherwise, I must rec'd a re:volt.

Well, I was going to submit something, but I am not going to consider myself part of the competition, out of fairness. I figure I will give a challenge or two first, to allow all of the newbs to get their feet wet, and then I will officially join in on the fray. :D

Good idea, but with all <takes quick head count> 6 or so of us, even assuming that we ALL tried to make a mod would be kind of pathetic...

(I don't have the time(haven't even had time to finish the base game yet!), and Origen would cheat... }:)

So the remaining 4 of you would have to "battle" it out.

Ok, not to sound so downbeat, the good news being that I've seen posts from at least 7 different people and a SLIGHT uptick in traffic over the last few weeks. On top of this 2(!) of us are relatively new(or that I've bothered to notice...) I'd like to see a mod contest some day, but...

Yes, but that will not include any of the items in any of the new releases, so it is pretty much obsolete.

So, While the items list can help a little, most of the new things will have to be found out manually.

Don't think I even have it anymore. The account where I was hosting it is also gone. If you have the file then you can make it available.

I don't have much time right now, but I'll put together a simple MOD in a couple of weeks from now. I have an idea that should be easy to implement. I hope that a few others are able to put something together, too. Would be nice to see a few new places if I start a game using the beta patch.
