the basement

Post by dragonbait »

"The Basement" Devilwhiskey mod can be downloaded here.
and as always be sure to read the readme file first. Thanks!

Since my little 4x4 mod map came out well, I've decided to make one on a larger scale. I'm calling it "the basement". I'm almost finished designing it first on graph paper. The map itself is 40x40 so i'll use a 60x60 to have some xtra space. I divided it into quadrants, making it so that you have to pass through each quadrant one at a time. I might want to use different walls/doors for each quadrant. Do you think it's easier to have 4 20x20 maps and link them together by scripts? or to just have one 40x40?

I'm gonna give each quadrant its own 20x20 map then link them together later. Seems like its easier to keep track of this way, especially if there are errors to find.

Different ways of handling this here. By making them seperate quadrants, that means that the automap will only show 1 quadrant (the one you are currently in). You would then, as mentioned, just travel between then via scripts.

The advantages is that you can give each quadrant it's own unique monsters and treasures. If it is all 1 map, then everything will be the same in each, unless you work out some slightly more complicated scripting.
I reject your reality, and substitute my own.

"the basement" quadrant 1

Post by dragonbait »

Well I've got the first quadrant map done. aaaahhh!! Not hard but just time consuming. I've been checking to see if it works after every 20 cells (one column) so if there's a typo in the code i can catch it quick. Now to set some traps, spinners, events, battles, teleportation squares, etc. Heres the code for the config file for quadrant 1. Now i'll check out the scripting tutorial. (great modding 101 tutorial by the way! origen. thanks. it gives great hope to us non-programmers.)

As far as I can take it. My goal is to have a completed mod. 4 20x20 maps linked together through scripts, with traps, spinners, battles, treasure, a small plot etc. a nice sidequest. I' might put a building out in the wilderness where the mod can begin there, since the wilderness is so void of civilization. I'll post my progress and querries along the way. You should make a mod too. Its allot of fun wandering around in a dungeon of your own design. :D

Created some of my own walls+doors with the texmake program. Fun tool to use.

Super-sweet! Groovy textures..

Seems a good idea to break it down to those (4) 20x20 maps.. easier to trouble-shoot as ye say & also, by Not seeing the whole thing via auto-map, it'll lend extra mystery..

got the quadrant 3 map done now. I'm gonna create more of my own textures so that all 4 quads have an original look instead of using the standard DW texpics but i won't post any more pics of the textures. You'll have to play it to see what its like once its done. Add some mystery there.

Am working on some scripts. One where you get attacked by some guard dogs.

Well, all 4 maps are completed and linked together. I made some really really cool textures and obtained a couple of wall/door textures from the BT games, + a I've got a few good scripts written so far. Now I'm gonna focus on making more scripts for each of the maps. Just gotta say it's a whole lotta fun! I'd suggest to anyone interested in making their own mods to DO SO RIGHT NOW! Check out Origen's modding 101 thread, Ricktavern's texture creating thread, and the Devilwhiskey tools tutorials. 8)

hmmm. now the game is crashing when going from quad 3 back into quad 2. The strange thing is, it crashes for one of my save games, but if I use a different save game, I can go through quad 3 - quad 2 and it does not crash on me. Any ideas? I'm just downloading the Python program now.

If you made changes to the scripts or maps, especially flag values, then DW could be getting confused using the saved data for a party that first explored one version of a place and then came back to another. I'd do my error checking with the monsters disabled, then enable them and do a run through with a fresh party. It's that kind of weirdness that probably caused my primary characters to have ridiculously high stats.

Thanks for the info. The fact that I saved my game and then changed some stuff must be the reason i was running into errors. I'm using a new team+save now. No problems that I can see now. And I'm trying to make it so that this is not a 1st level quest, which is easier than i thought. Maybe something that you can do after you defeat the starter dungeon and level up. Here's how my new team did in the basement's first batte. (slaughtered by the guarddogs!)
